Kitesurfing: Self Landing/launching Course
Welcome to Flukes Kitesurfing Self Landing and Launching Course
Self landing is a great skill to learn and understand to give you more confidence as an independent Kiter
We've made a video for each of the 4 methods we know for self landing to demonstrate each process in depth, including WHEN TO, and when NOT TO use them.
Learning each method will give you the opportunity to land your kite in almost all conditions, safely and confidently. Please review the videos 1 by 1 in order to make sure you get all the information required to make the right decisions for self landing.
Have fun, stay safe and see you in the videos.
Self Landing Safety
Kitesurfing can be extremely dangerous. Self-landing should not be attempted by inexperienced kiters. Unexpected things happen and all care should be taken to minimize the risk of injury. Always use good judgment and caution. Watching a video tutorial cannot and should not replace being taught in person by a qualified instructor. Use these videos as a guide only.
Create a controlled environment. Start by learning and practicing these methods of self landing learn in light winds-no more than 15knts, in an area with lots of space and free of any potential hazards that could harm yourself, your kite, or others around you. Look for open sandy beaches with soft sand with no people or obstacles around you.
Practice with a friend. While these techniques are designed to perform solo, it's a good idea to first practice each of the techniques below with a partner. While they don't need to necessarily touch the kite, have them there to support you if needed. This may be holding the back of your harness, staying close to the kite to catch it if needed, or even to simply help you re-launch and practice the landing again until you nail it!
Understand your safety system. How does your safety system work? When was the last time you activated it? It may be surprising but most people answer that question with... "I have never used it." Make sure you have practiced using, and thoroughly understand your safety system. The first video will show you a great technique for practicing, however, if you have never activated your safety system do so OVER shallow water first. It is very important to know how your bar handles, its' safety system, how it works, how to activate it and how to re-connect once activated.
1. Self Landing with your Safety System
How to self land your kite neatly, activating the safety system to land the kite Leading edge facing into the wind.
In this first video we cover the most basic and most important self landing technique: Using your safety system.
Understanding your own safety system, how it works and how you can use it to self-land is important to practice and master.
2. Self Landing in Light Winds
In this video we cover a simple and fast way to self land in light winds.
Like above, this is a great way to get the kite on the ground leading edge facing into the wind, but without using the safety system. It's important to note that this is a LIGHT WIND ONLY self landing technique.
3. Self Landing by Walking up the Lines
While this certainly isn't the "text book" self landing technique, we believe it's an important one to know and understand.
This method is all about landing the kite in most situations (up to 30 knots) with only your hands.
4. Self Landing using an Anchor
Using an anchor to self land is a great stable technique that removes yourself from the kite sooner than the other methods. It is also great as a pre planned self land prior to your kite session. This video demonstrates using your leash as an anchor, however, the same can be achieved using a strong rope/strap and a Carabiner. That way, you can set this up before you head out and use the anchor to not only self land when you come in, but also self launch before you head out.
Flukes Kitesurfing How to Self Launch
1. Self Launching on a soft flat surface
How to self launch your kite on a flat sandy of grassy area. This method is great for self launching on sandy beach and is exactly how I self launch when I am in a wide open area with no hazards
1. Self Launching using an anchor
In this video we cover how to safely launch your kite using an anchor. This is a great way to both self launch and land and we highly recommended it. Using an anchor allows you to launch in even the toughest most undesirable areas.
